History and surroundings
Villa Rana is a unique art nouveau building from 1905 situated in the University of Jyväskylä historical campus area in the upper part of the centre of the city. It is designed by architect Yrjö Blomstedt as a home for the teacher seminar’s drawing, sculpture and other handicrafts teaching. After being used as a lecture building by the university, Villa Rana is currently renovated for cultural use.
The surrounding campus area is known worldwide for its Alvar Aalto designed buildings, but has a mixture of old and new achitecture.
