Do you know how Jyväskylä’s Seminaarinmäki got its name? Do you remember who Uno Cygnaeus was and how he is connected to Jyväskylä? Have you thought about where Finnish-language civilisation started?

Aaro Vuotila and Annu Sankilampi from Teatterikoneen bring the story of Uno Cygnaeus, the father of the elementary school, to the stage in a fun and lively way, awakening the audience’s interest in recent Finnish history!

Uno Cygnaeus (1810-1888) was a man whose contribution to promoting equality in Finnish education was exceptionally significant. The story of his life takes us from Hämeenlinna via Turku and Helsinki to Vyborg, from there to the distant shores of Alaska and St Petersburg, stopping in Jyväskylä, where he founded Finland’s first Finnish-language seminary. Uno’s life story is full of stages, passion and dedication that few people today know about. History is the key to understanding where we come from, and through theatre we can do this in a powerful way; evoking emotions and ideas.

Join us on a journey through the history of Uno Cygnaeus and Finnish education. Together we can learn from the past and be inspired to build the future!
